Weed Control Programs

Your first defense in controlling weeds in your lawn is to develop a thick healthy turf.  This is done through aeration, cutting the lawn at a height of 2.5 to 3 inches, proper feeding and not letting a lawn go dormant in the summer. Refer to our Watering Tips section to learn more.

Cosmetic use of pesticides is now banned in most municipalities.  As a result organic controls have emerged as the only way to directly target weeds.  At this time there is no organic product that can be applied to kill any established weeds by any company . Established weeds need to be mechanically removed. Refer to our Mechanical Weed Removal Tips section to learn more.

Organic weed control is for pre-emergent weed control only.  Use in the first year generally results in a reduction of 50 to 60 percent of the target weeds and 2 to 3 years are necessary to match the results of synthetic pre-emergence herbicides (To learn more please read: http://www.hort.iastate.edu/gluten/grndmain.html).
